The Tin Can Island customs command has intercepted another container load of 440 pump action riffles concealed with POP cement barely three months after the seizures of over 600 arms by the Federal Operation Unit (FOU),zone A of the Nigeria Customs Service.
Displaying the seizures to newsmen, the zonal coordinator, zone ‘A’, ACG Monday Abuse who represented the comptroller General of Custom stated that the consignment was shipped in from turkey.
He also said that the consignment was declared as POP Powder to cover up the ammunitions, as he confirmed that the seizure was based on intelligence report of the officers of the command.
According to Abueh, “these are pump action of various designs intercepted based on intelligence report of the Tin Can Island Customs under Comptroller Bashir Yusuf. He is one of our best Officers. He was able to make use of the intelligence report made available to him and the container was identified and intercepted, there is no question of any Officer releasing container here, it was intercepted even before declaration”.
Abueh noted that investigation is ongoing and that the Customs lawyers would get to the root of the interception. “Prosecution of matter like this in Nigeria involves a lot of time to push out the culprits, but our lawyers have all what it takes to prosecute those involved”, Abueh stated.
According to the CAC of the command, Comptroller Bashir Yusuf, the said riffles were manufactured from USA and Italy and were shipped to Nigeria from Turkey in a 20ft container with registration numbers PONU210024(1)22G1.
“Generally, anything we have been intercepted like this, it requires a lot of intelligence and profiling of importer, 21st century Customs calls for that, you don’t have to wait for things to happen before you start working, and that is just what we meant and what ACG just said.
“POP is mainly used after effects of building, it is a very safe item to conceal because it is not injurious to anyone, whatever anyone might use attract our attention and we really work on these, today is the end result where we got these and Nigeria is saved from the hazards by 440 pieces riffles which is in our custody”, Bashir stated.
The breakdown of the seizure concealed in the same container according to the CAC are as follows: 100 black tornado single barrel riffles, 75 pieces silver magnum single barrel riffles, 50 pieces of alter pump action riffles, 215 pieces black single barrel riffles, 164 pieces of riffle nozzle,103 pieces of arms grips, 110 pieces of trigger, 113 pieces of arm guard, 107 pieces of bridge block, 122 pieces of Allen keys, 117 pieces of assemble butt, 516 50kg bags of POP cement.
