Adu, FICS; and Rapo Isaac Fabusuyi (MICS) at the Open Day organised by ICS at the British Council in Ikoyi, Lagos recently The Nigeria chapter Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS), Captain Samuel Olarewaju has called on shipping and allied companies in the country to seize the opportunity offered by the institute to develop their workers for better service deliveries. Captain Olarewaju who spoke exclusively to Transport Day newspaper on the side lines of the Open Day held by ICS at the British Council office in Ikoyi, Lagos, reasoned that membership of ICS comes with a lot of advantages and exposure. According to him, “new shipping companies and existing ones and those into shipping generally, should take advantage of the institute that has been there for about 100 years training people, grooming people, getting professionals, training and re-training”. The Captained explained that “to be a member, it depends on the level you are in, your background, are you into export and import business, are you a professional in maritime business? If you are new in the business, there are certain courses you have to take to groom yourself to understand the business. Thereafter, you can now go for diploma course. There are two levels of diploma courses-foundation diploma and advanced diploma. Once you get the two diplomas, you have to do Professional Qualifying Examination. Once you do that, you will be nominated to be a member”. On the cost of running the institute’s programmes, he said “it is affordable, about two hundred pounds per subject”. He explained further that “before you can call yourself as a chartered ship broker, you must have been approved as a fellow by the institute, as not all members are chartered. We have a functional office in Port Harcourt, and a make shift office in Lagos, the government has promised to give us a place. Prospective students who may wish to get more information about the institute are advised to log onto to ICS website-www.ics.org.uk. “You can link the West Africa branch and you will see us there. For now, we have Ghana as the hub for West Africa”, he said. In Nigeria, he revealed that “we have over 60 members, and about 30 students”.]]>
