The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation in collaboration with the Lagos State Chamber of Commerce has held a one-day workshop with the theme on ‘Promoting Road Safety In A Smart City Through Continuous Driver Education’ at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium at The Secretariat, Alausa.
The programme which witnessed massive turnout just as promised by the Director-General Lagos state Chamber of Commerce and Industry, at the press briefing on Friday 25th of January,2019.
In his address of welcome, the Honorable Commissioner, Mr. Ladi Lawanson said the workshop is an additional strategic step towards achieving the goal of the UN Decade of Action that seeks to reduce the rate of fatalities and crashes on roads all over the world. While emphasizing that the continuous training and retraining of drivers will ensure the safety and wellbeing of all categories of road users, Lawanson reiterated the state government’s commitment towards the safety of life and property of the commuting public as they go about their respective activities and encouraged stakeholders to key into the opportunity to improve the overall condition of transportation in the state.
He enumerated some of the measures already put in place by the Ministry as including but not limited to road safety campaigns carried out by the Ministry’s Vehicle Inspection Service at various motor parks and garages and the creation of the Lagos State Traffic Radio to help monitor gridlocks and guide motorists.
Lawanson reiterated that the Lagos State Drivers Institute, LASDRI, was established for the sole purpose of retraining and educating drivers on appropriate dos and don’ts of driving using modern and requisite facilities for eye testing, computerized driving simulators, biometric data capture and data base equipment among others.
Also at the event was the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi who lauded the Ministry for its remarkable efforts and outstanding contributions towards improving the transportation sector in the country. He stated further that Lagos plays a major role in the development of traffic management solutions in the country promising that the Commission will retain its relationship with the Ministry in the continual provision of traffic related solutions in the country.
Among the speakers was Mr. Patrick Adenusi from the non-governmental organization, Safety Beyond Borders, who admonished both the stakeholders present and the organizers of the workshop. He urged the government to appropriately mark the roads and install appropriate road furniture that do not mislead the motorists while appealing to road users to cooperate with the government on improving road behavior.
