The Managing Director of the Lagos Computerised Vehicle Inspection Service, (LACVIS), Segun Obayendo, has reiterated the need to have vehicles transporting petroleum products certified road worthy to prevent accidents on the highways.

He stated this during a presentation at the Lagos State Petroleum Marketers Safety Conference 2018 which held at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos with the theme-Enhancing Productivity in Handling Petroleum Products: The Imperative of Safety.

Obayendo, represented by the Quality Control Manger, Edward Larbi, gave a presentation titled “ Enhancing the Safety of Petroleum Products with Road Worthy Vehicles,” affirmed that transportation and distribution of petroleum products are fundamental to the business and are key safety issues.

According to him, investigations at the various LACVIS centres across the state reveals a sad reality that the maintenance culture for vehicles is fast becoming non-existent.  This, he believes, should no longer be condoned by petroleum transporters, stakeholders and contractors/ owners.

Failure to maintain these vehicles appropriately and inspect them as statutorily required is the reason for the large numbers of trucks and trailers that dot the highways as broken down vehicles or involved in accidents, he explained.

The DG of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Hon Hakeem Dickson, who gave the keynote address also appealed to the motoring public to do the right thing. According to him, a vehicle has no business being on the road if it is not road worthy. To this end, he encouraged petroleum transporters to take advantage of the LACVIS centres and have their vehicles inspected to determine if it is fit for the roads.

The Lagos State Petroleum Marketers Conference is an initiative geared towards strategic sensitization of key players in the downstream sector in order to tackle the widespread apathy to health and safety management practices.

Several dignitaries were in attendance which include Hon. Akinlaja Joseph, Chairman House Committee on Petroleum Resources Downstream, representatives from the Vehicle Inspection Service, VIS, Federal Road Safety Corps, Mrs Lara Dominga Odebunmi, pioneer DG, Lagos State Safety Commission, and many industry players.
