The Western Marine Command of Nigeria Customs Service has disclosed that it has donated relief materials worth N40.9m to the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management.

Customs Area Controller of the Command, Olugboyega Peters, in a statement released by the command, said that the donation was done in compliance with a directive of the Comptroller General of the NCS, Col Hameed Ali (retd), that the items be donated to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 lockdown.

Peters said the items were smuggled, seized and condemned by the court before being released in line with the directive of the government.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, who was represented by an official of the ministry, Mrs Oluwakemi Adedeji, thanked the Controller General of Customs for the support and high compliance level.

She gave the assurances that the relief items would be distributed judiciously to the underprivileged and the vulnerable in the society.

She said the relief items would be moved to Nassarawa State for distribution.

Peters gave a breakdown of the relief items as 720 bags of foreign parboiled rice; 297 bales of used clothing; 11 sacks of used shoes, among others.
